Behind The Engine: How DSDbook Enables Digital Workshop Booking at Mercedes‑Benz

Ricardo Matos · May 29, 2026

Have you ever booked a workshop appointment online on the Mercedes‑Benz website? For most customers, it’s a quick and straightforward experience, but behind those few clicks sits a powerful booking engine designed to handle complexity at global scale.

In this edition of our Behind The Engine series, we take you behind the scenes of DSDbook – the booking engine that quietly handles a high volume of bookings across markets worldwide to schedule workshop appointments with ease.

The product behind the appointment

After becoming Mercedes‑Benz owners, customers will eventually need to visit a workshop, whether for routine maintenance, a service check or a repair. This is the moment where DSDbook comes into play.

DSDbook allows customers to schedule workshop appointments online at their preferred Mercedes-Benz dealer, choosing a time that suits their needs without the hassle of phone calls or manual coordination. It acts as a key digital touchpoint in the customer journey, helping ensure that the experience of owning a Mercedes-Benz remains smooth long after the vehicle has left the showroom.

A journey shaped by scale and evolution

After being managed by another Mercedes-Benz partner, it was brought to Mercedes-Benz.io at the end of 2019.

Since then, it has evolved significantly. The team has led major UX and UI redesigns, aligning the product with modern design standards while consistently focusing on removing friction from the customer journey. In parallel, the technical architecture has been reworked to improve modularity, scalability and long‑term maintainability.

Today, DSDbook supports millions of bookings every year and is available across a wide range of international markets, continuing to scale globally as part of the Mercedes‑Benz digital ecosystem. In addition to the web interface on Mercedes‑Benz websites, the product also offers a REST API, allowing other channels to consume the booking engine. This means customers can book appointments not only on the web, but also via the Mercedes‑Benz app or even directly from the vehicle’s infotainment system.

From complexity to simplicity

From its very beginnings, DSDbook has been a complex product. It integrates with a wide range of third-party systems and services. Early on, this complexity was visible to users, resulting in a basic and visually limited journey.

Over the years, the complexity behind the scenes has only increased. Today, DSDbook integrates with even more third‑party services, such as licence plate and address lookups, as well as a growing number of products from the Mercedes‑Benz ecosystem, including Mercedes‑Benz Account, Recalls, Service Select, Mobile Service and Declaration of Consent.

Despite this, the guiding principle has remained the same: conceal complexity from customers and deliver a simple, modern and intuitive experience. The product’s growing relevance is reflected in its strong adoption over time. Since joining Mercedes-Benz.io, DSDbook has continuously expanded its reach and importance within the customer journey, supporting a steadily increasing volume of bookings worldwide.

The people behind the engine

Behind DSDbook is a highly engaged, cross‑functional team. While roles and compositions have evolved over time, the current team brings together a broad mix of expertise:

  • Architecture
  • Frontend and backend engineering
  • Quality engineering
  • Experience design
  • Cloud operations
  • Data analytics and data engineering
  • Product ownership, service management and support

What unites the team is a shared sense of ownership and pride. Each member actively contributes to the product’s sustainable evolution, striving to do the right things in the right way, without cutting corners, and holding themselves to the highest standards of quality. “The best or nothing” isn’t just a slogan, it’s a mindset.

The technology that keeps it all together

What truly sets DSDbook apart is its ability to bring technical complexity under control while remaining flexible and user‑friendly.

One key strength lies in its integrations. The product connects with a broad range of Dealer Management Systems, bringing them together under a unified internal “language” to enable a more consistent and reliable booking experience across markets.

The booking journey itself has also been reimagined. Instead of a rigid, linear flow, DSDbook uses a flexible “shopping cart” approach, allowing services and artefacts to be added dynamically. This enables both users and API consumers to adapt the journey as needed, creating a smoother and more natural experience.

Under the hood, DSDbook relies on lightweight microservices that enable the team to work independently, run experiments such as A/B tests, and safely introduce new ideas without impacting core applications.

AI is increasingly becoming part of the story as well. Internally, AI‑assisted tools help accelerate development. Externally, AI is already live in features such as summarising customer issue descriptions, helping customers articulate their needs more clearly while working within technical constraints of downstream systems.

Why DSDbook exists

At its core, DSDbook exists to make workshop bookings easy, fast and accessible across channels. As part of Mercedes‑Benz’s broader digital transformation, the product was created to move customers away from traditional phone‑based booking and towards a more comfortable, self‑service and ubiquitous experience.

The long-term vision is clear: DSDbook aims to be the central booking engine at Mercedes-Benz, regardless of whether customers book via the web, an app, in-car systems or future touchpoints. All while delivering a world-class experience that reflects the luxury nature of the brand and creates tangible value for the business.
